A Game Changer - The New Rules for Job Hunting : "Headhunter" Hiring Secrets: The Rules of the Hiring Game Have Changed . . . Forever!
I am an HR Director at a $500 million manufacturing firm. Thus, I am always curious as to what the latest words of wisdom are on the street for job hunters so I know what they are being told. This is the first time I have felt compelled to write a review on one of these many job hunting books and the reason is simple - From an HR Director's perspective, "Headhunter" Hiring Secrets NAILS IT on many fronts.
Let me illustrate:
We have been hiring about 5 people a month and, on average, receive 175 "applications" for every position. As the author points out, the majority of job seekers are quickly excluded. (Read the chapter on "Job Hunting is Like High School Football Tryouts.") Why? They do not differentiate themselves.
Thus, I want to say this...if I had to pick a single point in this book that rises above the rest, it is this:
Companies are not in the business of hiring people. Companies are in the business of making money. It is only when a person positions themselves properly and strongly in front of us and shows us how they can make us money or save us money, will we hire them. That is the ONLY reason companies hire. We don't hire you because you need a job. We hire you because of what you can do for us!
Do you know what we do as a company? Do you know our mission statement and what we stand for? And then, most importantly, how can your background, skill sets and experiences add value to what we do?
This author shows you ways to figure it out and then position yourself strongly in front of us. (See the example letters on pages 165 and 166.) This market is brutally competitive.
Most job seekers just "fling" themselves at us hoping we will figure out what they can do for us and we hire them. NO! You must figure out what you can do for us and get our attention.
